CSA farmer calls conventional agriculture a “losing proposition”

A southern Wisconsin CSA farmer calls the conventional agriculture model broken. 

David Perkins of Vermont Valley, a Community-Supported Agriculture operation near Madison, says commodity production is a losing proposition.

“You invest all this money, you grow all this crop, you hope to get a harvest, and then the granary, or the milk plant, they tell you what they’re going to pay you.”

But with a CSA, he tells Brownfield.

“I set the price, I set the product, you get what I give you, and I get my money upfront.”

Brownfield interviewed Perkins at the 2020 MOSES Organic Farming Conference in La Crosse, Wisconsin Friday.
