Former state representative and agricultural educator Steve Reinhard grows 1,200 acres of row crops and operates a seed and chemical business with his brother Tim in Bucyrus. He tells Brownfield they’ve altered management plans to improve conservation practices and water quality. “Half of our farm drains to Lake Erie and half of our farm drains to the Scioto River so it’s very important to help to manage what we do here,” he says.

Jerry and Les Seiler have been no-till farming near Fayette, Ohio for more than 35 years growing corn, soybeans, alfalfa, malting barley, and wheat while balancing working off the farm for decades.
Jerry says about two-thirds of their farm is rented and over time, landowners have become their mentors. “Farming the ground like it’s ours, that’s what they like, and they feel like it’s helping keep their ground for future generations,” he explains.
Les tells Brownfield their farm in the Western Lake Erie Basin has used cover crops and continuous no-till for about 10 years, “And finding some really cool results in how we’re building our soil health and the resiliency.”
The Ohio Master Farmer awards are given during the Ohio Conservation Tillage and Technology Conference in Ada. Awards are sponsored by Brownfield Ag News and the Ohio Farmer Magazine.
