Legislation aims to improve conservation outcomes

Bipartisan legislation that would direct the USDA to establish a program to improve conservation outcomes has been introduced.

Congressman Glenn G.T. Thompson of Pennsylvania says the Farmer-Driven Conservation Outcomes Act of 2020 would provide more transparency with reporting requirements for conservation outcomes.

“The government, Washington in particular, doesn’t look at the voluntary conservation efforts that happen on a farm each and every day,” he says. “This bill would allow us to attract those and give farm families credit for the measures that they’re doing in terms of conservation.”

The bill would provide USDA with tools and authority to quantify the environmental benefits of conservation activities in order to demonstrate their impact and improve program performance.

Thompson introduced the legislation with Ohio representative Marcia Fudge. Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey and West Virginia Senator Shelley Moore Capito introduced companion legislation in the Senate.
