Maryland 4th state to ban chlorpyrifos

The Maryland state legislature has banned the use of the insecticide clorpyrifos (klor-peer-ih-foss). It is the fourth state, after California, New York and Hawaii to do so.

According to WBOC-TV the final bill allows possible waivers for Maryland farmers who grow green beans for canners and orchard growers who apply the pesticide in winter to tree trunks if no alternatives can be found by the end of next year.

Corteva Agriscience, a big maker of the chemical, will stop production by the end of this year but the registration for chlorpyrifos is good through October 1st, 2022.

Generic chlorpyrifos products will still be available.
