Study reinforces agriculture’s critical economic role
A new study shows the economic impact of the food and agriculture sector on the US economy exceeds $7.3 trillion.
The study, commissioned by 21 food and ag groups, reveals that one-fifth of the US economy and one-fourth of American jobs are linked to the food and agriculture sector.
Conclusions of the study also show the industry contributes to:
- Nearly 47 million jobs
- Nearly $2.3 trillion in total wages
- More than $885 billion in taxes
- And more than $148 billion in exports
According to the study, food and agriculture in these states contributes to:
- Illinois – More than 1.9 million jobs and $318 billion in economic output.
- Indiana – More than 954,000 jobs and $172 billion in economic output.
- Ohio – More than 1.6 million jobs and $279 billion in economic output.
- Michigan – More than 1.2 million jobs and $193 billion in economic output.
- Wisconsin – More than 1.1 million jobs and $216 billion in economic output.
- Minnesota – More than 1 million jobs and $192 billion in economic output.
- South Dakota – More than 220,000 jobs and $47 billion in economic output.
- Nebraska – More than 535,000 jobs and $131 billion in economic output.
- Iowa – More than 821, 000 jobs and $207 billion in economic output.
- Missouri – More than 998,000 jobs and $159 billion in economic output.
- Tennessee – More than 982,000 jobs and $151 billion in economic output.
- Arkansas – More than 503,000 jobs and $93 billion in economic output.
Wages, taxes and exports for each state and impacts by congressional district and are also included.
