Farmers for Free Trade calls for tariff suspension

The organization Farmers for Free Trade is calling on Congress and the Trump Administration to suspend trade tariffs to further stimulate the U.S. economy. Executive director Brian Kuehl said in the letter he provided to Brownfield that tariff elimination would send a signal to global markets and help reverse recent COVID-19 related market declines.

Kuehl suggests the U.S. not walk away from trade disputes over intellectual property and national security issues. He does ask, however, that the U.S. and trading partners lift remaining tariffs while tackling the global pandemic and related economic disruption.

There remain tariffs and retaliatory tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars in goods despite progress made in the last several months in eliminating them.

The letter is addressed to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.
