Milder, but wet days ahead for much of the Heartland

For the remainder of Friday, a late-season snowstorm will move from the Midwest into the Northeast, with accumulations expected from northern sections of Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio into parts of southern New England.

During the weekend, the focus for significant precipitation will shift into the Southeast, where rainfall could total 2 to 4 inches or more from the Mississippi Delta into Georgia and South Carolina. In contrast, little or no precipitation will fall during the next 5 days in the Southwest and upper Midwest.

Elsewhere, cold conditions will gradually ease in many areas, although below-normal temperatures will persist at least into early next week across the Midwest and Northeast.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for lingering colder-than-normal conditions from the Great Lakes region into the Northeast, while warmer-than-normal weather will cover the Plains, South, and West.

Meanwhile, above-normal precipitation nearly nationwide, particularly in the Southeast, should contrast with drier-than-normal conditions in California and the western Great Basin
