USCA estimates COVID-19 impact at $14.6 billion

The United States Cattlemen’s Association estimates the economic impact of COVID-19 on the cattle industry will exceed 14.6 billion dollars.

USCA says that figure represents the total actual and future impact, based on existing market data and futures market data.

The group also offers recommendations on how federal direct payments to cattle producers should be structured.  For cow-calf producers, it suggests an average per-cow funding basis of just over 127 dollars, broken out by spring and fall calving cows and accounting for heifer retention.

A separate study commissioned by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association estimated total damages to the cattle industry at 13.6 billion dollars as of early April.
