March milk production up 2.4% on year

Milk production in the major U.S. states during March 2020 topped 18.34 billion pounds, up 2.4% from March 2019. The top state was California, followed by Wisconsin and Idaho.

The USDA says production per cow in the primary 24 production states averaged 2,072 pounds, 34 pounds more than last year, with Michigan claiming the top spot at 2,320 pounds per cow, 100 more than the second best average in Colorado.

The herd of 8.853 million head was 64 million larger than a year ago.

For the year to date, U.S. milk production is more than 56 billion pounds, 2.9% ahead of 2019.
