The 2030 Sustainability Goals for rice

The chair of the USA Rice Sustainability Committee says the industry’s 2030 Sustainability Goals will lead to continuous improvement in 5 key areas.

Jennifer James is an Arkansas rice farmer.  She says those goals are, “Increase land-use efficiency, reducing soil loss, greenhouse gas emissions, water use, biodiversity, and energy use,” she says.

Dr. Steve Linscombe is the executive director of the Rice Foundation says the goals are attainable, because they are interrelated and rely heavily on yield improvement.  “If we can increase the yield of an acre of rice by 1,000 pounds using the same amount of water, the same amount of energy, then that will really impact land-use efficiency, water use, and the energy use metrics,” he says.

USA Rice engaged a panel of scientists and other industry experts to set reduction targets which will lead to continued improvements for each of the indicators.
