Garden centers can open as Michigan Governor modifies stay-home order
Michigan’s stay-at-home order has been extended, but there’s some good news for the state’s garden centers and landscapers.
The new executive order from Governor Gretchen Whitmer lasts until May 15th, but landscapers, lawn-service companies, and nurseries can now return to work, subject to strict social distancing. Big box stores can also re-open their garden centers.
It’s a change being praised by the Michigan Agri-Business Association and Michigan Farm Bureau.
Michigan Greenhouse Growers Council President Dave Mast issued a statement saying garden centers are prepared to reopen and safely get their product out to customers. He says it won’t be business as usual, but they appreciate the opportunity to put safeguards in action and operate.
Michigan Farm Bureau President Carl Bednarski says the state’s fourth-largest agricultural sector contributes $700 million annually to the economy and employs roughly 9,000 people, and they will benefit from the move.
