Minnesota corn planting jumps nearly 40 percent

Corn planting has leapt ahead of normal in Minnesota.

The latest USDA crop progress report says 40 percent of the intended acreage has been planted, compared to the five-year average of 19 percent.

Dry and mild conditions also allowed farmers to reach five percent on soybean planting.

Spring wheat planting, at six percent done, is a week ahead of last year but more than two weeks behind normal.

Oats are 43 percent planted and barley is 11 percent planted.

Sugarbeet planting is nearly 30 percent complete, 12 days ahead of last year but a week behind average.
