Illinois NRCS offering livestock mortality management solutions through EQIP

USDA’s Natural Recourses Conservation Service in Illinois is offering technical and financial assistance to producers being forced to euthanize livestock because of COVID-19 impacts.

State Conservationist Ivan Dosier tells Brownfield they are using funds through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) to help with environmentally friendly disposal solutions.

“We know that is a difficult decision for the farmers. They just want to get their product out into the market, and if they can’t do that we want to help them offset some of those potential negative impacts.”

Dosier says the first application deadline is this Friday, May 8th and applications will be prioritized every two weeks until further notice. He says he hopes the service is not needed for very long and that other alternatives will be found to keep the food chain intact.

Producers facing livestock depopulation can submit applications for EQIP and an early start waiver to their local NRCS office.
