Cheese, butter production up on year

The USDA says cheese and butter production during March 2020 were up on the year.

Total cheese production was 0.2% higher at 1.124 billion pounds, with a 1.1% decrease for Italian type cheeses canceled out by a 1.4% increase for American types.

Butter production was 194.287 million pounds, a 7.5% jump from March 2019.

Nonfat dry milk for human consumption was reported at 172.685 million pounds, 6.7% higher, but skim milk powder came out at 40.843 million pounds, 15.4% lower.

Dry whey production totaled 81.551 million pounds, up 5.4%, while lactose for human and animal consumption was pegged at 96.115 million pounds, down 15.8%, and whey protein concentrate production was 38.953 million pounds, 7.3% lower.

The USDA’s next set of supply and demand estimates is out on the 12th.
