Perdue talks food supply chain post-pandemic
Many are wondering how flaws in the food supply chain exposed during the coronavirus pandemic will be addressed by the federal government.
During a webinar hosted by SVG Ventures Thursday, U.S. Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue said USDA has had to be nimble and dynamic in response to COVID-19.
“We’re a regulatory agency, and right away when schools were closed we had to give waivers for many of those regulations that didn’t make sense in light of this pandemic.”
He says his agency has “broken the mold” and will continue to do so.
“You cannot just act the way you always have. That’s why it’s very, very important bringing disruptors to the marketplace.”
Perdue says he’s thrilled large, deep-thinking investors are becoming more interested in the ag sector and what it will take to keep the food supply secure.
“Whether it’s vertical growing, urban farming, or the kind of agendas that we (have), from using satellites for productivity, precision agriculture.”
And Perdue says rural connectivity is going to play a pivotal role.
