Bipartisan bill would reward farmers for climate-smart practices

A new bipartisan Senate Bill introduced yesterday would break down barriers for farmers interested in participating in carbon markets so they can be rewarded for climate-smart practices.

The Growing Climate Solutions Act was introduced by US Senators Mike Braun of Indiana, Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, and Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island.

The bill authorizes the Secretary of Agriculture to develop a program and help farmers, ranchers, and private forest landowners participate in carbon markets.

Through the program, the USDA will provide transparency and legitimacy of third-party verifiers and technical service providers that help private landowners generate carbon credits through agriculture and forestry related practices.

The program has the support of farm and environmental groups including American Farm Bureau, National Corn Growers Association, American Soybean Association, US Cattlemen’s Association, National Farmers Union, Environmental Defense Fund, and more.

NFU President Rob Larew says the Growing Climate Solutions Act is an important step toward strong and comprehensive climate policy that provides farmers of all sizes with the resources they need to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

National Association of State Departments of Agriculture CEO Barb Glenn says enhancing climate resiliency is critical for the future viability of producers, processors, and rural communities. She says NASDA is glad to see Congress working across the aisle to develop solutions that work for the food and agriculture sector.
