China vows retaliation for Hong Kong sanctions

China says it will retaliate against the United States for ending the preferential trade status for Hong Kong and the signing of a sanctions bill against China. President Trump took both actions Wednesday because of China’s new national security law in Hong Kong.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs says Trump’s actions gravely violate international law and basic rules of international relations.

There are few details of potential U.S. sanctions on China and it is unclear what China might do to retaliate – whether it would affect the phase one trade deal signed earlier this year.
