MO farmer about to harvest has concerns

A northwestern Missouri farmer says he’s on the doorstep of harvest

Richard Oswald said he’s a few days out from corn harvest and his soybeans are dropping leaves. He tells Brownfield he’s having excellent weather for field drying and an early freeze would be welcome.

“Right now, frost would not be negative for us at all,” Oswald said. “Frost would kind of help speed the soybean harvest along a little bit.”

But he is concerned about dry conditions mixed with low humidity. Oswald said that combination during harvest has caused problems in past years…

“There was so much dust and fuzz in the air from the soybeans that they touch a hot muffler on a combine or tractor and just burst into flame,” he said. “We had a couple of times we could have lost a combine just because things catch fire and you have to see it in time to put it out.”

A cool and dry weather pattern is expected to set in early next week.
