Minnesota farmer done chopping an “above average crop”

A west-central Minnesota farmer is pleased with how his silage turned out.

Nathan Collins of Murdock says it was an above-average crop.

“It held in there good for moisture. It didn’t seem to mature as fast as other years, so we were pretty excited about that because that can give us opportunities to maintain the moisture and quality level we needed to. It ended up being a great season.”

He tells Brownfield once they finished chopping it was time to begin cutting soybeans.

“We had some that got hailed on and are a little shorter, but still yielded pretty well. And then we’ve had others that just aren’t quite mature all the way. That early frost we had in this part of the area really killed the beans off more than expected, so the tops are done and ready but the bottoms are not.”

Collins says that makes soybeans more difficult to combine, but with some sunshine he still expects to be done with his beans this week.
