USDA sees 2020 U.S. wheat crop at 1.8 billion bushels

The USDA estimates 2020 all wheat production at 1.826 billion bushels. That’s down 5% from the 2019 total of 1.932 billion and a little bit less than what analysts were expecting heading into the report, and includes 1.171 billion bushels of winter wheat, 658.64 million bushels of hard red winter, 266.235 million bushels of soft red winter, and 246.147 million bushels of white winter, and 585.990 million bushels of non-durum spring wheat, 530.152 million bushels of hard red spring and 88.838 million bushels of white spring. Last year’s winter wheat crop totaled 1.317 billion bushels with spring wheat at 561.095 million bushels.

The average yield for all types of wheat was pegged at 49.7 bushels per acre, compared to 51.7 a year ago, with winter wheat at 50.9 bushels per acre, almost 3 bushels less than last year, with spring wheat averaging 48.6 bushels per acre, 0.3 higher.

Planted area for all types of wheat was reported at 44.439 million acres, compared to 45.485 million last year, with harvested area of 36.746 million acres, compared to 37.394 million a year ago. For winter wheat, planted area was 30.415 million acres and spring wheat planted area was 12.25 million acres, compared to 31.474 million and 12.67 million acres, respectively, in 2019. Harvested area for winter wheat came out at 23.024 million acres, compared to 24.592 million a year ago, with spring wheat harvested area at 12.06 million acres, compared to 11.625 million last year.

The USDA’s next set of supply, demand, and production projections is out October 9th.

Arkansas: Winter Wheat: 4.125 million bushels, compared to 2.6 million in 2019; average yield of 55 bushels per acre, compared to 52 a year ago; harvested area of 75,000 acres, compared to 50,000 last year

Illinois: Winter Wheat: 35.36 million bushels, compared to 36.85 million in 2019; average yield of 68 bushels per acre, compared to 67 a year ago; harvested area of 660,000 acres, compared to 680,000 last year

Indiana: Winter Wheat: 17.5 million bushels, compared to 16.12 million in 2019; average yield of 70 bushels per acre, compared to 62 a year ago; harvested area of 250,000 acres, compared to 260,000 last year

Michigan: Winter Wheat: 33.75 million bushels, compared to 34.79 million in 2019; average yield of 75 bushels per acre, compared to 71 a year ago; harvested area of 450,000 acres, compared to 490,000 last year

Minnesota: Spring Wheat: 72.08 million bushels, compared to 79.8 million in 2019; average yield of 53 bushels per acre, compared to 57 a year ago; harvested area of 1.36 million acres, compared to 1.4 million last year

Missouri: Winter Wheat: 22.94 million bushels, compared to 24.57 million in 2019; average yield of 62 bushels per acre, compared to 63 a year ago; harvested area of 370,000 acres, compared to 390,000 last year

Nebraska: Winter Wheat: 34.03 million bushels, compared to 55.29 million in 2019; average yield of 41 bushels per acre, compared to 57 a year ago; harvested area of 830,000 acres, compared to 970,000 last year

Ohio: Winter Wheat: 34.79 million bushels, compared to 21.56 million in 2019; average yield of 71 bushels per acre, compared to 56 a year ago; harvested area of 490,000 acres, compared to 385,000 last year
