Trump and Biden on the Green New Deal
The proposed Green New Deal— which calls for net zero emissions in 30 years— was rejected by both candidates in the presidential debate Tuesday night.
Former Vice President Joe Biden says he does not support the Green New deal.
“I support the Biden plan that I put forward which is different than what (President Trump) calls the radical Green New Deal,” he says.
Biden says his plan would work toward achieving net-zero emissions and creating jobs.
President Donald Trump said the Green New Deal would destroy the country as it would cost more than the country could make in 100 years.
“It’s 100 trillion dollars,” he says.
The proposal outlines ways to combat climate change by transforming the economy, including agriculture, and expanding renewable energy.
Agriculture groups have criticized the “deal” which calls for changes to animal agriculture. Collin Woodall with the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association has said US beef producers are already committed to sustainability and are responsible for only two percent of all carbon emissions in the US.
The Green New Deal resolution was drafted by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts, both Democrats
The Senate failed to pass the resolution in March 2019.
