GPC lawsuit to continue paying out settlements

Settlement payments in the Freeman vs. Grain Processing Corporation lawsuit will continue after Sept. 30 2020, according to a statement issued by Grain Processing Corporation (GPC).

Freeman vs. Grain Processing Corporation, filed in 2012, states that emissions from  GPC facilities caused pollution that resulted in loss of use and enjoyment of the plaintiffs’ (Freeman) properties. After two appeals to the state’s supreme court, the case moved ahead and  Judge John Teleen of the District Court ruled in favor of Freeman. By early 2019, Tellen  ordered GPC to pay out approximately $45 million, divided up between local individual settlements and pollution control upgrades to their facilities.

Rust Consulting, who has been in charge of handling claims, says those who have been approved will begin receiving settlements soon by mail.

GPC says they have put aside $2 million of the settlement funds toward Muscatine community service projects. Additionally they will be spending $6.5 million on additional pollution control equipment, money which is not part of the settlement payout.
