Minnesota celebrates Farm to School Month

October is Farm to School Month.

Sami Burrington, a school nutrition specialist with the Minnesota Department of Education, tells Brownfield she’s encouraging Minnesotans to celebrate connections between students and local food.

“And while this year looks a little different because we can’t celebrate in person, we are still finding time to share our farm to school stories, mostly virtually. (and) Express our divine gratitude to our school nutrition professionals and farmers that are still providing these essential services to get our Minnesota students fed across the state.”

Minnesota Ag Commissioner Thom Petersen says when schools serve kids locally grown food, it’s a win for everybody.

Congress designated October as National Farm to School Month in 2010.

The following year, Minnesota established a Farm to School leadership team to build initiatives that help kids eat healthy, support nearby farmers, foster economic vitality, and strengthen communities.
