Winter weather could be split in Missouri

A weather official says the La Nina weather pattern caused by the cooling of Pacific Ocean temperatures will affect Missouri this winter. Mike Halpert, with NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, says it could be a case of two Missouris, “We do favor above average temperatures across the southern part of the state. The northern part could go either way and at this point there’s just no way to say. It’s as likely to be warmer winter as it is to be a colder winter in the northern part of the state.”

Halpert projects a split for the U.S. this winter, “How we’re going to describe it would be a tilt towards colder and wetter across the north and drier and warmer across the south.”

Halpert says La Nina makes climate more predictable but the factors could change.
