Weed Science Society protests bills that would change pesticide laws

The Weed Science Society of America, along with more than 300 ag and conservation groups, are protesting two bills (HR 7940) (S. 4406) introduced in Congress that would change pesticide laws.

They say the bills, co-sponsored by Democrats and one Independent, would “put science in the backseat” and allow anyone to petition against pesticides deemed safe by the EPA, allowing politics to drive such decisions.

They say the EPA’s risk benefit assessments are “widely recognized as the gold standard” with many countries aligning with or deferring to the EPA’s regulatory decisions on pesticides.

The groups say the bills would allow any pesticide banned for use in the EU or Canada – for any reason – to be banned in the U.S., even if deemed safe by the EPA.

Letter opposing the bills has been sent to the House and Senate.
