Senate Democrats seek CFAP change for dairy beef producers

Some Democrats from dairy states are asking the Trump Administration to undo a change in USDA’s CFAP program.  Ranking Member on the House Ag Committee Debbie Stabenow of Michigan and fourteen other House members say the change in CFAP-2 takes away the ability for dairy farmers to receive relief for losses from meat production.

In a letter to Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue, the Democrats say the milk producers often have diversified operations with significant revenue from the meat of cows retired from milking, and support returning to CFAP-1 guidelines which compensated livestock producers for losses related to meat produced from breeding animals.

In addition to Senator Stabenow, others signing the letter to Secretary Perdue include:

  • Gary Peters (D-MI).
  • Amy Klobuchar (D-MN),
  • Tina Smith (D-MN)
  • Tammy Baldwin (D-WI),
  • Patrick Leahy (D-VT),
  • Robert Casey (D-PA),
  • Angus King (I-ME),
  • Bernie Sanders (I-VT),
  • Ron Wyden (D-OR),
  • Patty Murray (D-WA),
  • Kristen Gillibrand (D-NY),
  • Chris Murphy (D-CT),
  • Charles Schumer (D-NY),
  • Jeff Merkley (D-OR)
