MU to launch Heroes to Hives for veterans

The University of Missouri is taking the Heroes to Hives program started at Michigan State University six years ago and launching it in Missouri.

Travis Harper, MU Extension agronomist and beekeeper, tells Brownfield the course is free and will be taught online and in person.

“The main aspect is just to get these veterans together. There’s an element of camaraderie there and teach them about honeybees and beekeeping and a little bit about agriculture and other pollinators and that sort of thing.”

Harper says the Heroes to Hives course is set up for all levels of interest.

“Some may become beekeepers and just want to do it as a hobby at their home. And, we also plan on having people that want to turn this into a business.”

The hands-on training will be at the University of Central Missouri Research Farm in Warrensburg, Missouri starting next March. Veterans can sign up starting November first through the end of February at Heroes to Hives
