NPPC petition leads to trade sanctions against Thailand
The US Trade Representative is issuing trade sanctions against Thailand following a 2018 petition from the National Pork Producers Council. The US is suspending $817-million in trade preferences under the Generalized System of Preferences program because the country hasn’t made sufficient progress providing the US with “equitable and reasonable market access” for US pork production.
The US is Thailand’s top export market and almost $4 billion of products are sent to the US under the GSP, but Thailand’s high tariffs and several non-tariff barriers on pork unjustly locks the US out of Thailand’s market.
NPPC president AV Roth, a pork producer from Wisconsin, says Thailand has taken full advantage of special US trade benefits while unjustly creating a de facto ban on US pork. He says the organization is hopeful the Administration’s move will result in fair access to the Thai market for US pork producers.
