Winter wheat crop has abnormally low ratings

This week’s crop progress report showed some slight improvement in the overall condition of the U.S. winter wheat crop. But USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey says the national wheat ratings, for this point of the season, are still at their lowest level in the last 20 years.

The crop is rated 43 percent good to excellent, 38 percent fair and 19 percent poor to very poor.  In Kansas, the top wheat-producing state, only 28 percent of the crop is rated good to excellent with 23 percent rated poor to very poor.

The low ratings are mainly a result of drought conditions across much of the central and southern Plains.
