Ohio Farm Bureau, NCRS extend demo farm project

Ohio Farm Bureau and the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service are extending the Blanchard River Demonstration Farms Network project. OFBF and NRCS signed a new, five-year agreement to continue research.

The project was established in 2015. Since then, three demonstration farms were created as models for innovations that reduce and prevent nutrient runoff.

OFBF Executive Vice President Adam Sharp says the research has been critical as the organizations look for ways for farmers to maintain production levels and protect water quality and soil health.

During the next five years, the project will continue research in edge of field monitoring, drainage water management, cover crops, and economic analysis. They will also begin new research on precision ag, subsurface nutrient placement, application timing, and strip tillage.

Project Manager Aaron Heilers says farmer’s commitment in another five years is a testament to how eager they are to find long-term solutions to water quality issues.
