South Dakota moisture levels short as harvest nears end

A nearly perfect week for fieldwork has South Dakota farmers nearly finished with harvest work.

Ninety-two percent of the state’s corn is harvested, which is well ahead of last year’s wet harvest and the 69% five year average.

Ninety-five percent of the sorghum and 74% of the sunflowers are harvested.

Half of South Dakota’s winter wheat crop is in good condition, with 6% excellent and 35% fair.  USDA reporters say 91% of the winter wheat crop has emerged.

South Dakota is dry, with only 44% of the state reporting adequate topsoil moisture, with 55% either short or very short of moisture. Only 19% of pasture and rangeland is in good condition.
