Tropical storms causing little gulf export disruptions
Agriculture exports through the Gulf of Mexico have had little weather-related disruption despite storms that have hit that area. Soy Transportation Coalition executive director Mike Steenhoek tells Brownfield Ag News shipping infrastructure has withstood the violent weather, or in most cases has avoided the worst of it.
“These storms, while they have imposed significant damage on a lot of communities, it hasn’t had a significant prolonged impact on our export capacity,” said Steenhoek, “so from an ag supply chain perspective that has been encouraging.”
Along with the high number of storms, Steenhoek says the weather systems have been fast to develop leaving little time to prepare.
“A lot of times you have to really execute on it quickly, that can make all the difference,” said Steenhoek, “so this is just a reminder of that lesson this unique hurricane season that we’re having right now.”
Hurricane Iota, the second major storm in days doing damage to Central America, is not expected to threaten the U.S. Gulf Coast.
