Hybrid selection season

Many farmers have begun filling out their roster of seed varieties for next season.

University of Minnesota Extension corn agronomist Jeff Coulter says hybrid selection is one of the most important factors that effects yield.

“It’s really important to spend time looking at that, looking at trial results from a lot of different locations (to) try and pick hybrids that are going to be consistent for farmers.”

He tells Brownfield putting the time into hybrid selection is going to pay off.

“What we’ve consistently found is that when trying to predict the performance of a hybrid next year, it’s best to use multiple location results and trials from a number of different places in your region.”

Coulter says there are a lot of good options out there and points to Extension research that shows a large number of hybrids can perform very well.
