InnovaFeed, ADM to build insect protein facility

A French human and animal nutrition company plans to break ground on a new U.S. insect protein plant next year.  InnovaFeed announced they will co-locate with partner ADM in Decatur, Illinois.  The plant is expected to have an annual production capacity of 60,000 metric tons of animal feed protein derived from Hermetia illucens, also called the black soldier fly, which InnovaFeed says has exceptional nutritional qualities.

ADM’s Decatur corn processing plant will provide feedstocks and waste heat to the InnovaFeed facility.

The plant will also have the capability to produce 20,000 metric tons every year of oils for poultry and swine rations, and 400,000 metric tons of fertilizer.  They anticipate producing a million tons of insect protein by 2027.
