Perdue defends Trump’s trade policies and farmer assistance

Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue defended President Trump’s trade policies Thursday in a discussion with farm broadcasters.

Perdue said while those policies may have caused “some pain” at the time, they are now beginning to pay off.

“Now I think we’re seeing those trade policies result in prices that can be very sustainable for our farm communities,” Perdue said.

He also defended the administration’s use of ad hoc Market Facilitation and Coronavirus Food Assistance Program payments to farmers, saying it helped many of them “continue their livelihood—and not get so much in debt that they couldn’t get out”.

Perdue spoke during the virtual National Association of Farm Broadcasting Convention.
