FAO report: Global freshwater resources have declined 20% in two decades

A new report from the Food and Agriculture Organization claims available freshwater resources have declined globally by more than 20 percent over the past two decades.

FAO’s director general says water scarcity and shortages in agriculture must be addressed immediately and boldly to address the problem.

The organization recommends what it calls sustainable development goals that include investing in water-harvesting and conservation in rain-fed areas, rehabilitating and modernizing sustainable irrigation systems, and combining those with best agronomic practices.

The report also mentions the adoption of drought-tolerant crop varieties and regulated water markets that can provide equitable allotments while promoting conservation.
