2021 organic dairy production down, robust premiums remain

Organic information provider Mercaris is calling for reduced organic milk production and cow inventories next year as part of its first biannual organic dairy market analysis.

Director of economics Ryan Koory tells Brownfield a surge in organic dairy demand this year with more at-home purchases should remain beneficial for farmers in 2021 with sales. “On pace to be up about 10 percent year over year by the end of 2020, after remaining flat essentially since 2017,” he says.

He is estimating organic milk prices to average $31 per hundredweight in 2021, nearly 70 percent above conventional forecasts, and says organic feed prices are also forecast lower.

Mercaris is market intelligence provider and online trading platform for organic, non-GMO and certified commodities.
