Congressman David Scott named House Ag Committee Chair

Congressman David Scott has been approved by the Democratic Caucus to serve as the first African American Chairman of the House Ag Committee.

The Georgia Democrat says he is honored to be chosen by his colleagues. Scott was born on his grandparents’ farm in South Carolina during the days of segregation. He says he owes the historic selection as first African American Chair to a diverse coalition of members across the nation.

Scott says he will advance the committee’s priorities for trade, disaster aid, climate change, sustainable agriculture, SNAP, crop insurance, small family farms, specialty crops, and broadband.

He has served as a member of Congress and the House Ag Committee since 2003. In the last three Farm Bills Scott helped secure disaster aid, food and nutrition program funding, and funding for scholarships for students attending 1890 African American land-grant colleges and universities.

The House Ag Committee has jurisdiction over a range of ag and rural issues including the farm bill, renewable energy, nutrition, crop insurance, and more.
