Dry fall exacerbates drought concerns
Many farmers are worried about worsening drought conditions heading into winter.
Ed McNamara, who farms in southeast Minnesota, tells Brownfield he only had an inch of rain in October.
“Melted precipitation (anyway), that was from an eight inch snow storm. But we’re kind of into a three month period here where we’re significantly below normal for precipitation.”
He says while the outlook could change, it’s going to take generous amounts of moisture to recharge soils.
“Everybody has their own opinion of what too dry is. My notion looking at the drought monitor map, that area goes from basically southwest Minnesota, encompasses most of western Iowa all the way down to Texas.”
The Goodhue County corn and soybean grower points out it’s so dry in Texas a lot of farmers decided not to plant winter wheat.
