Nutrien launches carbon program
Nutrien, the world’s largest provider of crop inputs and services, has launched a comprehensive carbon program to help growers improve sustainability and productivity.
Mike Frank, CEO of Retail at Nutrien Ag Solutions, says the program is an opportunity for growers to get rewarded for practices they are already doing or could be doing in the future.
“Ultimately our objective is to measure the carbon impact on a farmer’s field and be able to prove that adopting some of these more sustainable practices like variable rate fertilizer, no till, and cover crops can drive productivity and a lower carbon footprint on a bushel of output created,” he says. “We believe these practices can drive on average about 1-2 tons per acre of improvement from an overall carbon standpoint.”
He tells Brownfield there has been a lot of talk about whether growers could get rewarded for sequestering carbon…“We actually think that the time is now for this program to come together and we can really see that over the next 5-10 years there is going to be a really valuable market for carbon so we’re incredibly excited about that,” he says.
The program will provide sustainable products and solutions, agronomic counsel, and a digital platform to track and measure sustainability and carbon performance.
Frank says Nutrien will pilot the program in North America in 2021-2022 in the US Corn Belt, Northeast, and other key cropping areas, as well as in in parts of Canada.
In 2021, the carbon program will benefit 30,000 acres of US land and 10,000 acres of land in Canada. In 2022, the program will benefit an additional 150,000 acres in the US and 10,000 acres in Canada in 2022.
