China trade expert Tai selected for USTR

President-elect Joe Biden has nominated Katherine Tai to represent his administration as US Trade Representative.

Tai is no stranger to the US/China trade war, USMCA and other trade relations as she has been the top lawyer for the House Ways and Means Committee since 2017 and the formerly served as chief counsel on China trade enforcement at the Office of USTR during the Obama Administration.

National Pork Producers Council President AV Roth says Tai’s deep trade experience in congress will serve her well in this new role. With continued success of the US pork industry in mind, Roth says he looks forward to working with Tai to rejoin the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), create a free trade agreement with the UK and expand access in heavily protected markets like Vietnam and Brazil.

America Farm Bureau President Zippy Duvall says they are pleased with the announcement recognizing that Tai has “deep trade experience and a solid understanding of the need to enforce existing trade agreements while working to expand markets access for American famers.”

Leaders of the National Milk Producers Federation and US Dairy Export Council recognize a long history of working with Tai on numerous negotiations including the Trans-Pacific Partnership and USMCA. They say they are “impressed by her strategic insight and dedication working on improved trade policies for US farmers.”
