South Dakota yield winner recommends regular scouting

Elk Point, South Dakota corn grower Brennen Bird is South Dakota’s corn yield champion for 2020. His nearly 311 bushel an acre yield topped South Dakota’s 157 entries in the National Corn Yield Contest.

“We just like to have fun and see what the crop can do,” said Bird, explaining to Brownfield Ag News his reasons for entering the contest, his third in as many years.

Bird – competing in the conventional non-irrigated category – used Pioneer P1185AM seed. The next best South Dakota yield was grown by Darren Mosel of Chamberlain, who harvested more than 303 bushels per acre in one of the irrigated categories.

The highest yield in the national contest was grown by Don Stall of Michigan, producing almost 477 bushels per acre.

Bird’s advice for corn growers is to avoid scouting from the pickup. He tells Brownfield he walks in his field’s regularly.

“We were out there every week, in fact we go out there every Monday and tissue sample and keep an eye for bugs or any signs of fertility deficiencies,” said Bird. “If you could just go in there and pay attention to what’s going on you could learn a lot.”
