2020 silver lining for Minnesota farmer

A farmer in southern Minnesota sees at least one silver lining to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Brent Mohn, a corn and soybean grower from Lakeville, says the growing season got off to a great start.

“Planting was awesome (because) there was no traffic to get from field to field. That’s what sticks out in my mind, everybody was at home.”

He’s referring of course to the stay-at-home orders issued by many states including Minnesota this past spring.

Mohn tells Brownfield the weather was pretty good too.

“So there’s definitely different things to think about for 2020 depending on what sector you were in. There are positives, and at the same time there are a lot of things that are troubling.”

Something that troubled Mohn, but was completely unrelated to the pandemic, was nearly a foot of snow in mid-October.

“That definitely put a little damper on it and drug things out. If we could’ve skipped the snow we would’ve been done kind of that week that it did snow.”

Mohn says it took about two weeks for conditions to get fit again, but an abnormally mild November allowed him to wrap up harvest and get a lot of other fall fieldwork done.
