Brexit means protocol changes for organic exports to U.K.

The new year brings a change to organic protocols for export to the United Kingdom. Completion of the Brexit process on January First means organic products exported from the U.S. to England, Scotland and Wales must be accompanied by an import certificate developed by the UK. However, organic shipments to Northern Ireland will continue to use the European Union’s system of documentation, which up to this point has been in use by all of the UK.

Also effective Friday, a new equivalence arrangement allows organic products certified to either USDA or UK organic standards to be labelled and sold as organic in both the U.S. and the U.K.

Brexit – the withdrawal of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from the European Union – has been in motion since it was formalized in early 2020.
