U.S. poultry to China a major export success in 2020

U.S. agriculture enjoyed some big export successes despite a global pandemic in 2020.

Greg Tyler with the USA Poultry and Egg Export Council says after being closed for several years, the Chinese market reopened in late 2019.

“And then in February 2020 we got hit with COVID, so a lot of the concern was whether or not the Chinese market would take off. But it did take off.”

He tells Brownfield China quickly became a top two market for U.S. poultry alongside Mexico.

“And it continues to grow. We’ve had a phenomenal amount of success getting back into the Chinese market, and I think that’s only going to continue to grow.”

Tyler says one aspect that makes the Chinese market unique is that it’s one of the few places on Earth that imports chicken paws.

“Chicken paws normally would go to the rendering plant here in the U.S. at about $0.02 per pound. But the Chinese will pay $0.80 on up.”

He says there are other populations that consume chicken paws, but China is by far the biggest customer.
