Grassley doesn’t expect deal with UK before Trump leaves office

Iowa U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley says he’d be surprised if the U.S. and United Kingdom reach a trade deal before President Trump leaves office.

During his weekly call with reporters Tuesday, Grassley was asked about the timing of an agreement post-Brexit.

“I’m sure that people in the Biden Administration want to have some input on it. On the other hand, it’s not something to diddle around with by either Trump or by Biden.”

That’s because he says Trade Promotion Authority will run out sometime this summer.

“And you’re never sure of getting Trade Promotion Authority reenacted. I hope that Biden wants to get it reenacted. I want to get it reenacted.”

Grassley says it’s in the best interest of both countries to get TPA reenacted before a U.S.-UK trade deal is completed.

The Trump Administration has been negotiating to secure comprehensive market access for U.S. agricultural goods in the UK by reducing or eliminating tariffs.
