Weather conditions looking up in the eastern corn belt

Farmers in the Eastern Corn Belt could see wet conditions in late winter and early spring, according to Brownfield Meteorologist Greg Soulje.

“This particular set up looks to be centered on the Eastern Corn Belt,” he says. “Yes, there are dry areas, but it may be a protracted wetter late winter and early springtime season in that part of the corn belt.”

He says the outlook for wet conditions in the east and dry conditions in the west is similar to what happened in the fall.

“I think it may be a continuation, ongoing, extension of what we saw here over the fall season where the wetter pattern favors the east, nominal to seasonal moisture in the west, and still too dry west of the Missouri River,” he says.  

Soulje says the current La Nina could lead to a more active weather pattern resulting in wet conditions in the Great Lakes areas, Illinois, Indiana, and surrounding areas.
