A big month for red meat exports

November was a strong month for beef and pork exports.

US Meat Export Federation president and CEO Dan Halstrom says beef exports were the largest in more than a year.  And while exports to China and Taiwan were strong again, there were some bright spots in other markets. “For the first time in quite a while we saw Latin America show up really strong,” he says.  “Mexico was up 23 percent and Mexico is key, especially for the end cuts.  We also so Central American fairly strong as well.”

US pork exports for 2020 have already set new full-year volume and value records, before adding in December values. And Halstrom says he’s encouraged by the demand increases to Latin American markets.  “There were 65,000 mt into Mexico, a growth of 13 percent,” he says.  “This just mirrors what we’ve seen the last couple of months and it’s really encouraging to see pork exports rebounding in Mexico the way it has been.  South America was encouraging as well, but it hasn’t rebounded the way Mexico has yet.”

Halstrom says he expects even more growth in both beef and pork exports as countries continue to recover from the coronavirus pandemic.
