USDA: corn, soybean production up in 2020

The USDA’s 2020 corn and soybean production totals were well below initial projections, but above 2019. Planted area was higher last year and yields did improve, but crops experienced widely variable weather during planting and development, with dry weather an issue in parts of the region and a derecho during August dramatically impacting Iowa and parts of surrounding states.

Corn totaled 14.183 billion bushels, up 4% from 2019’s total of 13.620 billion, but more than a billion bushels below the USDA’s first guess, with an average yield of 172 bushels per acre, up 4.5 on the year, and harvested area of 82.467 million acres, 1% above the prior year.

Soybeans were pegged at 4.136 million bushels, 16% larger than the year before total of 3.552 billion, but 289 million less than the first guess, with an average yield of 50.2 bushels per acre, an increase of 2.8, with harvested area of 82.318 million acres, a jump of 10%.

The USDA says 330,000 acres of the 2020 corn crop and 494,000 acres of beans were still unharvested as of mid-December.

The USDA’s 2021 prospective planting estimates are out March 31st.
