Biodiesel, electric vehicles can share the road on decarbonization efforts

Can biodiesel, renewable diesel, and electric vehicles co-exist in the effort to reduce carbon emissions?

National Biodiesel Board Technical Director Scott Fenwick says…“The answer is yes. The real question is how and where.”

He says technology will play a huge part in answering the “how and where.”

As decarbonization efforts continue, NBB Director of Environmental Science Matt Herman says biodiesel will have to share the road.

“Like solar and wind, electric vehicles will undoubtedly be a key technology in our long-term decarbonization strategy,” he says. “However, unlike wind and solar, which provide zero emissions power when they’re running, electric vehicles aren’t always zero emissions.”

He says charging location, time of day, and end-use efficiency can affect the total emissions of an electric vehicle.

Fenwick says the important thing to note is that there will be challenges and opportunities for biodiesel, renewable diesel, and electrical vehicles.

“So as we move forward, the introduction of EVs and electric vehicles are just another opportunity that biodiesel will have to demonstrate the improvements and benefits that we as an industry can provide,” he says.

Fenwick and Herman made these comments during the virtual 2021 National Biodiesel Board Conference.
